Oxfam witness 'utter devastation' in Philippines

Oxfam aid teams have witnessed scenes of "utter devastation" in one of the worst affected areas of the Philippines.

Aid experts, who have travelled to Daanbantayan, the northern-most tip of Cebu, said they were greeted by children holding up signs that read, "Help. We need water, food and medicines.”

“The scene is one of utter devastation. There is no electricity in the entire area and no water. Local emergency food stocks have been distributed but stocks are dwindling,” said Tata Abella-Bolo, a member of Oxfam’s emergency team in Cebu.

Local officials told the team that 98 per cent of the houses and structures in the area were damaged including the town hall and a temporary evacuation centre.
