Irish teen 'beaten to hell' in Cairo jail

An Irish teenager caught up in violence in Cairo and detained by the Egyptian authorities might have been "beaten to hell", his sister has claimed.

Ibrihim Halawa, 17, and his three sisters Omaima, 20, Fatima, 22, and Somaia, 27, were among hundreds of people cleared out of the al Fath mosque when security forces stormed the building on Saturday.

Their sister Nasaybi Halawa, who was at the family home in Dublin, said she believed her siblings are being held at Tora prison, where the men have allegedly been beaten.

Ms Halawa said, "The person I'm speaking to told me they were beating men to hell. She doesn't know how my brother looks but she told me 'I can guarantee for you, all the men were beaten there. They didn't exclude anyone from hitting them'."

Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs Joe Costello said the Halawa siblings were "in good health" and will be taken to the prosecutors' office in Cairo later today.
