Sandra Gregory was caught attempting to smuggle heroin out of Thailand in 1993. She was originally sentenced to death, but having spent time in prison in both Bangkok and the UK, she received a pardon from the King of Thailand in 2000.
Speaking to ITV News she said at the moment the two young women held in Peru on drug offences will be in a deep state of shock, and may be under the mistaken belief that their nightmare may ending soon, and that the British and Irish authorities may be able to "sort it all out" and take them home.
Melissa Reid and Michaela McCollum appeared in court in Lima, but it is unclear whether they have been charged, their lawyer said.
Two women accused of smuggling 12kg of cocaine into Peru could face up to three years in custody and a maximum of 25 years in prison.
A British woman accused of drug trafficking in Peru said she and her friend "were not smuggling for money, we were smuggling for our lives."
