Victim's mother: NHS minimum staffing level 'a definite'

The mother of Kane Gorny, who died of dehydration after hospital staff ignored his pleas for a glass of water, told ITV's Daybreak a minimum staffing level in the NHS "is a definite" and could have helped save her son's life.

A review of patient safety by US expert Professor Don Berwick will be released today and is expected to recommend that there should be a legal duty for staff to report when procedures go wrong.

Prof Don Berwick, who was appointed to President Barack Obama's administration, is also set to call for a minimum staffing level to be introduced.

Rita Gorny believes both changes would have helped her son, she said: "A minimum staffing level is a definite as far as I'm concerned and I don't think junior doctors should be left alone, I think there should be a senior doctor at all times.

"I think junior doctors should be able to ask for help if they need it, without feeling stupid".
