Turkish police have launched a crackdown on anti-government protesters in Istanbul after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned the demonstrators to evacuate in a speech at a rally in the capital Ankara.
This woman in a red dress, pictured as a police officer sprays tear gas in her face, has become a symbol of resistance for anti-government protesters in Turkey.
The image has been widely shared on social media and has spawned dozens of cartoons and pieces of graffiti in the cities of Istanbul and Ankara.
In one image that has been plastered on walls, the woman appears much larger than the police man next to the caption "The more you spray the bigger we get".
According to one protester, maths student Esra at Besiktas, the photo "encapsulates the essence of this protest."
"The violence of the police against peaceful protesters, people just trying to protect themselves and what they value."
Anti-government protesters and police have been fighting a running battle for control of Istanbul's Taksim Square on an 11th day of clashes.
"We'll never forget what we have seen in the past few days. People bleeding on the street from rubber bullets and nurses beaten by police."
