Children play after school in Zaatari refugee camp

As the Zaatari refugee camp near the Syrian border continues to grow attempts are made to keep the huge numbers of children in education.

Schools are provided by a mix of Jordanian authorities and charities as well as international bodies such as the UN and EU.

A new school funded by the European Union was opened earlier today. The EU Commissioner opening the classes said:

"These children have to feel they have friends who care. It is impossible to make any refugee camp child-friendly but we are keen to try to help to bring at least some sense of comfort or normalcy for them."
