Facebook: 'We need to do better' over hate speech

Facebook has said it will review how it deals with "controversial, harmful and hateful" content after pressure from campaign groups and advertisers.

Recently several feminist groups urged the social network to ban pages that promote violence towards women.

In a blog post, Facebook said: "In recent days, it has become clear that our systems to identify and remove hate speech have failed to work as effectively as we would like, particularly around issues of gender-based hate.

"We need to do better - and we will."

The company said they will begin rolling out steps immediate to do "better" which will include extra training for the teams that review and evaluate reports of hateful speech or harmful content.
