Poll: 60% oppose taxpayer funding of Thatcher funeral

More than half of voters believe the taxpayer should not pick up the tab for Baroness Thatcher's funeral, an opinion poll released tonight suggests.

A ComRes survey for the Independent on Sunday and the Sunday Mirror found 25 percent of those surveyed thought the funeral should be paid for out of public funds compared to 60 percent who were opposed.

Thirty-three percent said they believe Lady Thatcher was Britain's greatest peacetime Prime Minister, whereas 41 percent disagreed with that statement.

But while 59 percent said she was the most divisive Prime Minister they could remember, almost as many - 56 percent - said the country needs more "conviction politicians" like her.

ComRes interviewed 2,012 British adults online on April 10 and 11.
