Cumbria councillors debate proposal for nuclear dump

Council leaders in Cumbria are deciding whether to rule out plans for a potential nuclear storage site in the North-West.

Three local authorities - Cumbria County Council and the borough authorities of Allerdale and Copeland - are to decide whether to sanction a more detailed study into the geological suitability of the area and thesocial and economic implications.

Currently the UK's nuclear waste is stored above ground, which is widely considered to be a temporary solution.
