Cumbria councillors debate proposal for nuclear dump
Council leaders in Cumbria are deciding whether to rule out plans for a potential nuclear storage site in the North-West.
Protesters both for and against the government proposals gathered outside the council meeting to voice their views.
Three local authorities - Cumbria County Council and the borough authorities of Allerdale and Copeland - are to decide whether to sanction a more detailed study into the geological suitability of the area and thesocial and economic implications.
Currently the UK's nuclear waste is stored above ground, which is widely considered to be a temporary solution.
