Clegg: Royal succession laws 'pretty well there'
The Deputy Prime Minister said new laws governing the Royal succession are 'pretty well there'.
He was speaking after the announcement that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby.
Nick Clegg has been given the job of ensuring new legislation is in place so that if the royal couple's first born is a girl, she could become Queen, regardless of whether she has a younger brother.
At a summit in Perth, Australia, last year, Commonwealth heads of government agreed that the succession laws in all countries where the Queen is head of state should be changed.
Mr Clegg said it was "surprisingly complicated" coordinating that change but he added that they were now putting the finishing touches to legislation.
