The acting Director General of the BBC, Tim Davie, has appealed to past and present staff "to come forward" if they think that can help with the police investigation into allegations against Jimmy Savile.

In a letter he wrote: "If you have an allegation about inappropriate behaviour on BBC premises, or by BBC presenters or other staff, you can inform the BBC Investigation Unit in confidence."
