Britain's Victoria Pendleton will be going for cycling gold in the women's keirin today. Here's a guide to what keirin is:

  • The race takes place over eight laps of the track.
  • Six riders will follow a motorised bike around the track until the final 600m where they will be let loose and allowed to race one another.
  • The motorbike ranges in speed from 15mph to 28mph in the women's event.
