The host of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, Azerbaijan, is facing criticism for its human rights record ahead of tonight's first semi final.

Human Rights Watch said dozens of families were forcibly evicted in four areas of the capital Baku to clear the way for extensive urban development. Many of those evictions took place without warning or at night, it says.

The country, which shares borders with Russia and Iran, has built new parks, roads, luxury apartments and a shopping centre in Baku as well as the glitzy 'Crystal Hall' which will host the competition.

There were protests outside some of the venues ahead of tonight's opening.
