77% blame Govt for petrol panic

77% of people surveyed for the ITV News Index has said the Government is responsible for causing unnecessary panic over the threatened strike by fuel tanker drivers.

Talks aimed at averting a strike will be held on Wednesday.

Senior Conservative critical over Government 'mistake'

Senior Conservative MP Bernard Jenkin has criticised the way ministers provoked panic-buying after a difficult week for the Government.

He told the BBC's Sunday Politics East programme:

My feeling is this was to try to take people's minds off donors, the Budget and pasties - and the Government added to the heat on this.

But really there should not have been any move to encourage people to buy more than they normally buy without consulting the industry first. I think that was the mistake.
