Driver critical after crash when he fell ill behind the wheel

A 57-year-old man was critical in hospital after his car hit a signpost and trees in County Durham.

The man, from Stanley, was driving his black Jaguar X-type eastbound along the A693 shortly after 6am on Friday when his car left the road.

Police believe he suffered a medical episode at the wheel.

He was taken to the University Hospital North Durham where he was said to be critical.
