A1 delay warning as repairs needed to Blaydon viaduct

Drivers are being warned of delays on the A1 while repair work on the Blaydon Haugh Viaduct are carried out.

One lane will be closed on the northbound carriageway between junction 73 (Derwenthaugh) and junction 74 (Scotswood) for the rest of this week while temporary repairs are made to the bridge joint. There will also be full closures of the northbound carriageway overnight so preparatory work can be carried out to the other lane.

Contractors for Highways England are working on a temporary solution which when complete will allow traffic to run at the usual 50mph speed limit until a permanent solution takes place in about six months time.

We would like to thank drivers for their patience while we carry out this repair and will fully open the bridge to traffic as soon as it is safe to do so.”
