SSI to close after no potential buyers come forward

The coke ovens and blast furnace at SSI in Redcar are to be closed after no viable offers were received from potential buyers.

SSI halted production on September 18th because of a global drop in the price of steel, and said it had "no other option".

Middlesbrough players will show their support for steelworkers facing redundancy at Redcar's SSI plant ahead of tomorrow's match against Leeds United.

The squad will warm up in Save Our Steel t-shirts, following a week of uncertainty about the future of the plant.

The club supported a similar campaign in 2009, and on Friday the club's chairman told the government: Teesside deserves answers.

"We’re in other work in football, but we can’t forget how difficult it is sometimes in these moments for everybody.

"We have to keep working to give the fans another three points and a happy week because it’s the only way to support them.

The main thing for me is when I leave the stadium knowing the fans are happy and they could forget their problems for 90 minutes because they’re happy that Middlesbrough have won the game.

"I would like to transmit my support because I know these are bad moments for that industry. I want to say that I’ll keep working even harder if that’s possible to keep the fans happy every single game so they can be proud of their team and club.

"I’m going to work in the way I work and I’m sure the players are going to give them a good performance on Sunday and hopefully we can win the game."

– Middlesbrough head coach, Aitor Karanka
