British hopeful Mark Cavendish took a painful fall in a dramatic collision in the final sprint to the finish line of the first stage of the Tour de France in Harrogate.

Cavendish was left on the ground clutching his shoulder and writhing in pain, as German Marcel Kittel won the 190.5km opening stage.
