Body found in River Wear mud-banks

The body of a man has been found lying on mud-banks alongside the River Wear in Sunderland.

It was spotted by a passer-by in the Castletown area on Saturday.

Northumbria Police were alerted and they passed the information on to the Coastguard service.

An RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched and the body of a middle-aged man was recovered.

The identity of the dead man has not been released.

“These types of incident are always difficult for our volunteers to deal with; but it is something which they train for to ensure that the task is carried out in a safe and respectful manner.

"We worked closely with the police officers at the scene to ensure that the correct procedures were followed to allow their investigation to take place once the body was taken ashore."
