Visitor numbers to the North East increase by 6%

The North East has seen visitor numbers to local attractions increase by 6% in 2013 compared to 2012.

Visit England have released figures that suggest people are prepared to pay to see England's tourist attractions, with a rise in numbers of people visiting admission-charging sites greater than for those that are free.

The North East saw particularly strong increases in overseas visits to local attractions, with visitor numbers to sites such as Durham Cathedral increasing by +18.7% in 2013 compared to 2012.
