A manhunt is under way after an alleged armed robbery at a Post Office in Ashington.

Armed police swooped after two robbers - one wearing a skull mask - allegedly held up the Humber Terrace Post Office on Hawthorn Road on Wednesday morning.

The two men brandished a gun at staff before stealing cash from the till, Northumbria Police said.

The staff and customers were left shaken but unharmed and detectives have launched a search for the suspects.

By the afternoon, police revealed they have made two arrests in connection with the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said:

Police were unable to say whether they were still searching for another suspect.
