Sunderland man charged with terrorism offences

A Sunderland man has been charged with terrorism offences following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

Zahir Khan of Nora Street Sunderland, was arrested in Sunderland yesterday (Thursday November 9, 2017) as part of a pre-planned, intelligence led investigation supported by Northumbria Police

He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this morning charged with five counts of Encouraging Terrorism, contrary to section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006, one count of Disseminating Terrorist Material, contrary to section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006 and three counts of Publishing or Distributing Written Material Intending to Incite Religious Hatred, contrary to section 29 of the Public Order Act 1986.

Khan was remanded in custody and will next appear before the Old Bailey on November 21, 2017.
