Newcastle Council made £2.8 million from cameras on two city centre bus lanes
New figures obtained by ITV News Tyne Tees show Newcastle City Council made £2.8 million from bus lane fines on just two city centre roads over the last year.
A Freedom of Information Request found more than 108,000 drivers were caught out by cameras on Pilgrim Street and John Dobson Street. The cameras were installed in 2015 as part of traffic management schemes.
When the cameras were first installed, the council expected to make £200,000 a year in fines, with the money being re-invested in city centre infrastructure.
The AA and RAC says excessive fines in new schemes is an indication that there is something wrong.
Newcastle City Council has defended the bus lane camera schemes.
