Northumberland teenagers part of pioneering sleep study
Teenagers at a school in Northumberland will be among the first in the country to take part in a pioneering new study looking into their sleep patterns - and the impact not getting enough sleep has on their learning.
Our Education Correspondent Tom Sheldrick enlisted the help of a drama class at Northumberland Church of England Academy to help explain:
The Oxford University 'Teensleep' project is looking into how a growing number of young people now go to bed after midnight - and don't get enough sleep because they're glued to their smartphones and other technology.
Here are some of those we met in Ashington:
250 pupils from Northumberland Church of England Academy will take part, and be taught about good bedtime routines, and stress-management techniques.
The project is looking to recruit 100 schools from around the UK, with some delaying their start time from 9am to 10am.
Researchers will assess the impact of both trials on pupils' exam performance, their wellbeing and mental health.
