Hundreds of people have gathered in County Durham to honour one of the region's bravest heroes.

Private Thomas Kenny, who was from Wheatley Hill, received the Victoria Cross in World War One. He was one seven people in Durham to receive it - and a special commemorative stone will be laid for every each VC soldier.

Thomas Kenny won the Victoria Cross after being ambushed in No Man's land. His officer was shot and he crawled for an hour with the lieutenant on his back to safety.

And to remember his heroism a special stone has been laid in his memory that will stay in Wheatley Hill.
