A group of protesters angry at threats of closure to children's centres in Newcastle have marched on a meeting they thought was being held by the council's leader.

Newcastle City Council has been holding a consultation on whether to close some centres across the city.

Campaigner Vanessa Cutter told ITV News Tyne Tees: "We feel people were conned out of the opportunity to have their say."

Meanwhile, councillors say their hands are tied but central government cuts. Cllr Geoff O'Brien, from Newcastle City Council, said: "We're just the instruments if you like. It is the government who are making the cuts, not us."
