Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal has been in Tynemouth today to offically open the Metro station following its revamp.

The building is one of the best examples of Victorian railway architecture in Great Britain and was once considered one of the most 'at risk' buildings in England.

The Grade II listed structure, which celebrates its 130th birthday this year, has undergone a multi-million pound restoration.

Hundreds turned out to welcome the Royal visitor the the North East. The Princess Royal also visited** **Gateshead to open Angel Court, a housing scheme for older people overlooking the Angel of the North.
