The Paralympic medallist is expected to serve the rest of his five-year sentence under 'correctional supervision', which is a form of house arrest in South Africa.

Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide after shooting his model girlfriend through a bathroom door at his home in 2013. He has always maintained it was an accident.

The Steenkamp family said in a statement they did not seek to avenge Reeva's death as that would not bring her back.

"However, a person found guilty of a crime must be held accountable for their actions," they added.

In November, prosecutors are set to appeal against Pistorius' sentence. If successful, it could see him jailed for 15 years.

South African prison officials have recommended that Oscar Pistorius be released from jail on 21st August and be placed under house arrest.

A prison committee recommended that Pistorius be released from the prison in Pretoria after serving one sixth of his five-year sentence for the unlawful killing of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

The Associated Press report that a full parole board decision is pending and that the full conditions of Pistorius' house arrest won't be made public by the authorities.
