Baby P mum's remorse 'not deciding factor' in release

The remorse of the mother of Baby P will no be a deciding factor in her release, the Chairman of the National Association of Probation Officers (NAPO) has told Daybreak.

Tom Rendon said the deciding factor in Tracey Connelly's release from prison would be the safety of the public.

It was also "unlikely" if Ms Connelly was released, she would be moved back to Tottenham, where Baby P died in August 2007.

Tracey Connelly, who was jailed in May 2009 for doing nothing to stop her son being tortured to death, could be released this week without protection.

Ministers reportedly decided that the 32-year-old should not be given a new identity and police protection when she leaves prison.

A source told the newspaper: "It is very rare to give prisoners a new identity. The bar is extremely high and Tracey Connelly did not cross that threshold."
