The Braemar Gathering is held each year just a short distance from the Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire, where the royals spend their summer break.

Queen due at Highland Games' Braemar Gathering

The Queen is today expected to make her traditional appearance at the Braemar Gathering, the biggest event in the Highland Games calendar.

Her Majesty is patron of the event in Aberdeenshire, which takes place just a short distance from the Balmoral estate where the royals spend their summer break.

Thousands of spectators will gather to cheer on participants in the tossing of the caber and tug of war contests, while prizes will also be fought for piping and Highland dancing.
