Terry Lloyd's daughter: Retracing steps was 'cathartic'

The daughter of ITV war reporter Terry Lloyd has described her journey to the place in Iraq where her father was killed as a positive experience.

"It was actually quite a healing thing to do - very cathartic in many ways," Chelsey Lloyd told ITV News.

She also met the US commander who gave the order to fire.

"Many people assumed that I would hate him. That's absolutely not the case," she said.

ITV News presenter Mark Austin was across the border in Kuwait when the ITN crew came under attack.

"The meeting with the American commander was extraordinary," he said. "It was helpful for him and it was helpful for Chelsey."

Commander: 'Unfortunate circumstances' around attack

The US Army commander who ordered the attack on the convoy containing ITV News reporter Terry Lloyd has told Mark Austin "I don't think anybody has any blame" for the incident, adding: "It was just a very unfortunate set of circumstances."

US Marine Corp Lt Vince Hogan, who was commander of Red Platoon, Delta Company, has spoken to Mark and Terry's daughter, Chelsey, for a documentary to be shown on ITV tonight on the tenth anniversary of his death.

Lt Hogan had been in email contact with Chelsey before they met in person. They met in a coffee shop in America, but without any cameras present.

Later, he agreed to meet Mark on film, on condition that the specifics of the attack were not discussed.

He said that of all the engagements he was involved in during the Iraq war, "this is the one I come back to - this is the only one I think about."

After the 2006 inquest into Terry’s death, where a coroner recorded a verdict of unlawful killing, the Lloyd family had called for the Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions to begin proceedings against the Marines believed to have been involved, including Lt Hogan.

Terry Lloyd's daughter visits where he was killed

A ITV documentary has followed the daughter of ITV News war reporter Terry Lloyd as she retraces his final steps in Iraq as part of her deeply personal search for the truth about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Terry was killed in southern Iraq ten years ago, along with cameraman Frederic Nerac and translator Hussein Osman, after their convoy came under attack by the US Army.

Cameraman Daniel Demoustier - who was driving the vehicle carrying Terry when they were initially fired upon - survived.

Chelsey Lloyd has returned to where he was shot dead, along with Daniel and presenter Mark Austin, who was also in the country covering the start of the war.

“I need an understanding of what happened that day because I wasn’t there and because it was so far away," she said.

"I need to piece together the events of those days to create a kind of timeline, a picture in my head, to help me.”
