Two British tourists have been shot in Barbados during a reported attempted robbery attempt as they made their way to the P&O cruise ship Adonia.

Two charged in Barbados over UK tourist shootings

Two men have been charged in connection with the shooting of a British couple on holiday in Barbados, local police said.

Inspector David Welch of Royal Barbados Police identified the victims as 59-year-old Ann Prior and her husband Philip, 72, who were shot during a robbery as they visited the Caribbean island on a cruise ship on Sunday.

Police expect the two suspects, who have yet to be named, will be brought before a court in the next 24 hours.

"Two persons have been charged. One person was charged with serious bodily harm to two visitors", Inspector Welch said. "He has, in addition, been charged with another man with the offence of robbery".

Woman leaves hospital after Barbados shooting

A spokesperson for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados has said the woman who was shot during a reported robbery in Bridgetown has been discharged. The second injured British tourist - a man in his 70s - remains in hospital.

Two persons from a cruise ship docked in Barbados were treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). A male and female presented to Accident and Emergency at approximately 2.45pm on March 17, 2013 with sustained injuries. They were seen within 20 minutes of their arrival and treated. The female has subsequently been released while the male was admitted to the hospital for continued care.

Moments after a British tourist is shot in Barbados

This photograph was taken moments after a British woman was shot in Barbados during a robbery in the capital Bridgetown.

A man - who is in his 70s - was shot in his left side during the same incident.

Both the man and woman were passengers on a P&O cruise ship and it is understood they were walking back to the ship when the incident happened.

They have both been taken to hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

The Adonia is currently on a 85-night world cruise

P&O Cruises has said the Adonia is on an 85 night world cruise which left Southampton on January 8, 2013 and will arrive back in Southampton on April 3, 2013.

The two passengers shot in Bridgetown, Barbados, are understood to have been returning to the ship when they were victims of a robbery.

The Adonia is the smallest of P&O's fleet and carries 710 passengers.

Report: Two British tourists shot in Barbados

Two British tourists have been shot in the Caribbean holiday island of Barbados as they made their way to a cruise ship, the Daily Mail is reporting.

Police in the capital Bridgetown said the victims - a man in his 70s and a woman in his 50s - were taken to hospital for treatment.

It is believed they were shot during a robbery.

The man was hit in his left side and the woman received a gunshot injury to her right thigh.

A statement from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are aware of an incident involving two British tourists in Bridgetown, Barbados. We are providing consular assistance."
