A train has derailed and caught fire on a bridge in Manchester city centre. It happened on Windsor Bridge, close to Salford Crescent.

British Transport Police say train driver is "safe and well"

British Transport Police have released a statement after a train derailed and caught fire on a bridge between Salford and Manchester:

“BTP officers were called to the rail line close to Wilburn Street, Salford, on Wednesday, 23 January following a report of a train carriage on fire.

“BTP and Greater Manchester Police officers attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 2.45pm.

“One of the carriages of the train, a charted service ran by West Coast Railways, has derailed from the rail line but remains upright.

“No passengers were onboard the train at the time of incident and the driver is safe and well.

“Officers, along with other emergency services and agencies, will be working to establish the full circumstances.”

Network Rail: "There have been no reported injuries"

Network Rail have released a statement after a train derailed and caught fire on a bridge in Manchester city centre:

“At 14:34 today we received a report of a derailment of an empty train between Salford Cresent and Deansgate station in west Manchester. The service, an empty charter service (two class 47 diesel locomotives and five coaches) operated by West Coast Railways, was travelling from Ardwick to Carnforth.

“Our response teams are currently on site along with the emergency services as there have been reports of possible fire. There have been no reported injuries.

“Services out of Manchester Piccadilly heading west towards Newton-le-Willows and Preston are severely impacted as the route is currently blocked.”

Travel disrupted after train derails in Manchester

Rail services have been suspended between Salford Crescent and Manchester Oxford Road after a train derailed and caught fire on a bridge.

It happened on Windsor Bridge, close to Salford Crescent.

The train belonged to West Coast Railways - a heritage railway company. Only the driver was on board and their condition is unknown.

Network Rail said the incident will disrupt rail services as all trains on the line have been stopped.

The A6 Chapel Street is closed both ways between A6042 Trinity Way and A5066 Oldfield Road because of the incident and the A6042 Irwell Street is also closed in both directions.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service were called to the scene at 2:37pm.

Four fire engines are tackling the blaze in Salford.
