A new historical discovery has pushed Dover's 800-year-old town hall from Grade II to Grade I.

Architecture found at the Maison Dieu had been hidden since Victorian times.

William Burges had remodelled the building in the late nineteenth century but his efforts had been hidden under layers of paint.

The council is now looking for money to restore the building

I'm delighted that we have upgraded Dover Town Hall to a Grade I listing, in recognition of its fine architectural details and historical significance."

– Heritage Minister, Tracey Crouch

The Maison Dieu is the most prominent historic building in Dover town centre and we are committed to both protecting it, and making it accessible."

– Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader, Dover District Council
