South remembers 100 years since Battle of the Somme

Special services are being held across the South to remember the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

The first day of the World War One battle was the single bloodiest day in the history of the British Army. 60,000 British Empire soldiers went over the top and almost troops 20,000 lost their lives in just 24 hours.

A two minute silence will be held in towns and cities including Oxford, while in Guildford a special football match is being held.

A new memorial is being unveiled today in Cranleigh. It has been designed by Nicholas Dimbleby, brother to Richard and Jonathan.
