Former MP David Rendel dies, aged 67

The former MP for Newbury, David Rendel, has died at the age of 67.

He won one of the most famous by-elections in British history when he was elected to represent Newbury in 1993 - winning a 28% swing from the Conservatives.

Mr Rendel had been suffering from cancer and died at his home in Berkshire on Monday (16 May).

He was a committed, selfless individual who I will remember particularly for his unyielding campaigning over so many years.

He was a friend and colleague who I know will be sorely missed by his friends, family and the party.

– Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat leader
