Fire crews spend nearly 24 hours tackling thatch fire

Fire crews are continuing to tackle a thatch fire in Sussex - that broke out at 4.35pm on Monday (5 April).

More than 60 firefighters have been dealing with the fire at the cottage on Shripney Lane in Bognor Regis.

Crews are likely to be in attendance throughout the day ensuring that the fire is fully extinguished and removing the affected areas of the roof. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

There were 14 fire engines at the scene, from Bognor, Chichester, Midhurst, Petworth, Littlehampton, Worthing, Selsey, Storrington, Havant (Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service) East Wittering and Steyning.

The people living inside the property escaped unharmed.

Attending crews have also undertaken a considerable salvage operation to save as many of the occupiers' possessions as possible.

The fire in the thatch is very deep seated and crews have been working throughout the night and this morning to extinguish it and remove the affected areas.
