Pilot airlifted to hospital after Isle of Wight plane crash

A man in his 60s has been air lifted to a hospital in Southampton after his small plane crashed near Sandown Airport on the Isle of Wight.

A member of the Isle of Wight ambulance service and St. John Ambulance were providing first aid cover for the site and treated the man before the air ambulance arrived.

Police are still dealing with the crash and are trying to establish what caused the plane to come down. Nobody else was on board the plane except the pilot and no other people have been injured.

The airport will remain closed for a significant period of time.

A special World War Two 'End of War 70th celebration' event is taking place at the airport this weekend, although it is unknown whether the crash involved one of the planes involved in the event.
