A private family funeral has taken place for the 8th Duke of Wellington, Arthur Valerian Wellesley, who died on New Year's Eve at the family estate near Basingstoke.
Descended from the 1st Duke of Wellington who defeated Napolean at Waterloo, the 8th Duke was 99. He died peacefully at the Stratfield Saye estate, surrounded by family, six months before the 200th anniversary of the famous battle.
He is succeeded by Arthur Charles Valerian Wellesley, 69, who becomes the 9th Duke of Wellington.
The private funeral took place at the estate chapel, attended by family, close friends and estate workers.
