Tomatoes grow on railway track because human waste is being dumped from trains
So much human waste is being dumped from trains that tomatoes are growing on an Essex railway track.
Human excrement dumped on the tracks of Greater Anglia services between Southend and Liverpool Street in London has acted as a natural fertilser for the plantys.
The pictures, taken along the line at Rochford in Essex, are on a section of track where older trains discharge sewage right the way into the platforms at Liverpool Street station.
The RMT Union has been fighting the government for a ban on the practice of dumping filth on our railways which it says is a serious health hazard.
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “It shames Britain's railways that tons of human excrement is being dumped straight on the tracks.
"The Government are prepared to tolerate this scandal.
"The RMT will continue to fight for an end to this disgusting and dangerous practice."
The Daily Mirrorreports that ministers admit it could take years to eradicate the problem.
This is because older trains would have to be taken out of service.
