Fire on ferry as it crosses Solent to Isle of Wight

Fire has broken out on a ferry in the Solent. The Wightlink ferry arrived in Fishbourne and was met by fire crews.

A plume of black smoke could be seen over the Solent today when a passenger ferry - carrying 52 passengers - caught fire.

Thirteen crew were onboard the Wightlink ferry sailing from Portsmouth to Fishbourne. No-one was badly injured - and the crew managed to put out the fire which started on the bridge. Rachel Hepworth reports
