Protesters have been arrested at a Berkshire weapons site after obstructing the location.

Thames Valley Police have confirmed that eight protesters have been arrested this morning.

They said: "Eight people have been arrested on suspicion of obstruction of a public highway and are currently in police custody at this time."

A spokeswoman for AWE, the firm which runs the site, said: "AWE on-site security, the Ministry of Defence Police and Thames Valley Police are currently in attendance and will remain for the duration of any protest action."

Chief Inspector Lindsey Finch, deputy local policing commander for Newbury, said: "We will continue to work with protestors to facilitate peaceful protest and ensure that any criminal activity is dealt with proportionately."

Protesters arrested at weapons site

Eight protesters have been arrested at a nuclear weapons site in Berkshire after trying to blockade the area.

They were detained on suspicion of obstruction of a public highway and are now in police custody.

The arrests were made at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) site in Burghfield.

According to the website Action AWE, the non-violent civil resistance blockade started at the site at 7am this morning.

A notice on AWE's website said: "The Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) atBurghfield is the place where Britain's nuclear warheads are assembled and from where the nuclear convoys take them up to Scotland to put on the Trident submarines."

"We want disarmament now."
