One dead in train crash

A train accident in Berkshire - at the scene of an unmanned level crossing - has left one person dead.

It happened at Ufton Nervet, near Reading, when a scooter rider was hit by a train earlier today. There have been calls to make the crossing safer, with signal operated barriers.

In 2004, seven people were killed when a train de-railed, after hitting a car that had parked on the tracks. From the scene, Nicola Hendy sends this.

Train death update

It's believed a man riding a scooter or moped was killed after being hit by a train at the Ufton Nervet rail crossing in Berkshire, at just after 1pm today.

British Transport Police are now on the scene.

There are delays on First Great Western trains between Newbury and Reading, Westbury and Reading, and Taunton and Reading.

A replacement bus service is being arranged. There is currently no rail or bus service between Newbury and Reading. A limited train service is running between Newbury and Bedwyn.
