A fitness fan has died after apparently becoming trapped beneath weight training equipment as he worked out in a garage in Portslade, Sussex. The man, named locally as 28-year-old Chris Bailey, was found lying on a weights bench.

Fitness fanatic crushed to death

A fitness fanatic has been crushed to death in a freak accident during an early morning workout at his home in Sussex. Chris Bailey was lifting weights when he became trapped underneath the bar at his home in Portslade.

Tonight people with home gyms are being warned to take extra care. Malcolm Shaw speaks to Chris Bailey's landlord Oliver Steer and fitness manager Audley Fraser.

Gym death - landlord speaks

A man has died after becoming trapped beneath weight training equipment as he worked out in his home gym.

Police were called to the house in Portslade on Saturday - where Chris Bailey, was found lying on a weights bench. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Fitness equipment caused death

His landlord, Oliver Steer, made the discovery. Sussex Police said:

"Officers received a call from the owner of the property & on arrival the man was found lying on a weights bench in the garage. The death is currently being treated as unexplained and t has been referred to the coroner's officer."
