Farmers call for protection as drones threaten sheep

When deliberately chased, sheep can die from shock Credit: ITV Meridian

A farmer in Hampshire has reported the first known incident of 'sheep worrying' caused by a drone.

Albert Carter from Alton thought the sheep were being attacked by a dog, but discovered they were actually being disturbed by a drone.

'Sheep worrying' refers to the animals being deliberately chased, normally by a wild animal or even a pet dog.

It can cause serious distress to the sheep, with pregnant ewes often miscarrying their lambs. In some cases, the animals die from shock.

Under the current Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules, drones - or unmanned aerial devices - must be flown at least 50 metres away from people and property. The CAA say this includes animals, but it isn't explicitly stated.

Farmers say the law needs to be clarified and are calling for more protection.
