Engine fire brings packed commuter train to a halt

An engine fire brought a packed commuter train to a standstill in between stations this morning.

The First Great Western intercity was stopped when plumes of smoke were spotted coming from its engine.

Passengers were stranded on the train that came to a complete halt about a mile from the next station.

Fire fighters were called to the scene near Twyford, Berkshire, shortly before 9am.

A spokesman for Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that the fire was extinguished before crews arrived. Firefighters then made sure the fire would not reignite before allowing it to make its way into the station.
