Shopper killed after falling from an escalator in Debenhams

A shopper has died at one of Britain's busiest department stores after he fell off an escalator.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the Debenhams flagship store on Oxford Street in central London on Wednesday night, after receiving reports a man had fallen.

London Ambulance Service said the patient was pronounced dead at the scene at just after 6pm, and treated five other shoppers for shock. Speaking to London 24 one eyewitness said:

I heard a loud bang, commotion followed and a man was lying on the ground, I initially thought it was fireworks.

Debenhams can confirm that police were called to the Oxford Street Debenhams store at 18.15 on Wednesday evening following a serious incident where a man fell from the third floor.

At this stage there are thought to be no suspicious circumstances. Police and London Ambulance Service attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Debenhams continues to work with the authorities on the matter.
