Petition against dam plan for Hampstead Heath
Campaigners are due to present a petition of 11,000 signatures today to Camden Council, calling on it to save Hampstead Heath from permanent damage. The petition opposes plans to build a major new series of dams on the heath.
The 38 Degrees petition encouraged thousands of people to send individual responses to Camden Council in response to the planning consultation.
Campaigners say the new proposals would permanently disfigure the heath, and would not prevent flooding in surrounding areas. The City of London Corporation has submitted the planning application. It says the works are necessary to prevent damage and potential loss of life caused by the level of flooding which could follow heavy rain.
