Watch the UK's tallest concrete structure get demolished

An 800ft tall power station chimney near Southend was demolished this morning - becoming the tallest concrete structure to be blown up in the UK.

The defunct 801ft (244m) Grain A Power Station was turned to dust in a split second, creating around 40,000 tonnes of concrete rubble and stacks of dust and smoke.

It had been a prominent feature of the Medway skyline for more than 30 years.

The existing infrastructure at Grain A has been used to build a 1,275MW gas-fired power station on the same site. The development of Grain B means the site can continue to provide electricity to homes and firms.

The Grain A Power Station was:

  • Taller than 55 double-decker buses stacked on top of each other

  • More than double the height of Big Ben

  • Able to produce enough electricity to power more than one million homes.
