Two seriously injured after car ploughs into block of flats

Two people are critically injured in hospital this afternoon

Two people are in hospital with life threatening injuries after a car ploughed into a block of flats in north London.

London Fire Brigade said the car came off the road around midday and hit a tree before crashing into a ground floor flat on Martini Drive on Enfield Island.

Passers-by managed to pull a female passenger, who was in her 60s, out of the car before emergency services arrived. The driver, a man in his 80s, had to be cut out of the vehicle by the fire brigade.

Both victims were airlifted to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Fire crews had to cut the man out of the car

Four people from neighbouring flats in the block were evacuated but no one inside was injured.

The entrance to Enfield Island Village had to be closed off this afternoon so fire crews could gain access, causing traffic delays.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area if possible.
